WASH Improvements Complete
Together with our valued partner, SAWASHI, WEFTA is making strides in sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) improvements in Kenya. The recently completed Nabongo Friends Church community driven water management system is a prime example. The project addresses a long-standing need for year-round access to safe water and improved sanitary practices in a growing urban area within Kakamega town.
A Sustainable Supply of Clean Water
These WASH improvements, which directly benefit approximately 1,500 people, are expected to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases, a life-threatening consequence of poor WASH conditions. To provide a sustainable supply of clean water to the church, neighboring households, and a public ablution block within the church compound, a solar-powered borehole system within the church compound was installed. Additionally, a Water Board was established whose members were trained in practical knowledge, technical skills, and management tools for effective operations. A small user fee and regular engagement with stakeholders will reinforce a sense of ownership and accountability within the community.
A Win-Win for Public Health
SAWASHI and WEFTA have pledged to continue to offer technical and advisory support to the Water Board. It’s a win-win for public health in the Nabongo Friends Church community!
