At St. Mary Magdalene’s Hospital & School in Tungan Gero, unsafe hand-dug wells once left families vulnerable to waterborne diseases, forcing students to fetch water instead of focusing on their studies. In 2025, that changed.
With support from WEFTA, Daughters of Charity International Project Services (DCIPS), and Groundwater Development & Engineering (Nigeria) Ltd., a new high-quality borehole was drilled. The borehole was equipped with a solar-powered pump and connected to a reliable distribution system. Bathrooms, toilets, and handwashing stations were constructed for both the hospital and the school. Water testing confirmed that the new system meets all health and safety standards.
Positively Impacting Over 50,000 Lives
Located in the North Central region of Nigeria in the Niger State, this completed WASH project benefits more than 50,000 people in the catchment area, dramatically improving healthcare delivery, safe learning environments, and community hygiene.
Sister Regina Achor, who oversaw the work, expressed her gratitude:
“Before this project, people drew water from the well, which exposed them to waterborne diseases. Now, with clean pipe-borne water, sanitation and hygiene have greatly improved—not just for the patients and staff but for the entire community.”
Community members echoed her words, saying simply:
“We thank God for the gift of clean water.”
