In May 2025, WEFTA, in partnership with Suma Jayma (Partnership for Sustainable Local Development), successfully completed the installation of 185 family protected wells and hand pumps across the municipalities of Laja and Corocoro in La Paz Department, Bolivia. This completed project now provides safe and reliable water access for an estimated 925 people.

Community-Led Construction

The project began in August 2024 and concluded in May 2025. Families played a central role in the construction process: each household contributed labor for digging wells, casting concrete rings and covers, and finishing protective platforms. WEFTA and Suma Jayma provided technical training, materials, and pump components—including PVC piping, reinforced covers, and pump supports. Families also contributed a small fee to hire local masons to refine the well structures.

This collaborative approach not only reduced project costs but also built community ownership and sustainability. Each family received hands-on training in pump operation and maintenance, along with illustrated guides in Aymara to ensure long-term self-sufficiency. Training also included water safety, boiling practices, and proper handwashing techniques.

Community Impact

With reliable access to clean groundwater, families no longer depend on unsafe or distant sources. Women and children in particular benefit from reduced time spent collecting water, while improved hygiene practices help prevent waterborne diseases.

One notable aspect of the project was the competitive yet collaborative spirit among the seven participating communities. Families organized themselves into work groups, supporting each other while also taking pride in completing their pumps quickly and effectively.

Remaining Needs

While the installation of hand pumps has transformed daily life for these 185 families, community leaders emphasized the urgent need for ecological latrines. Many households continue to rely on open defecation or precarious pit latrines, underscoring sanitation as the next critical step for health and dignity.

Looking Ahead

This project demonstrates the effectiveness of pairing technical expertise with strong community engagement. The result is not only sustainable water access but also a foundation for better hygiene, health, and quality of life across these rural Bolivian communities. KUDOS to the Suma Jayma team for completing a comprehensive and impactful project!
