Students and teachers at Mafi Afleavenu Primary School are benefiting from improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities following the successful completion of a WEFTA-supported project implemented by Concerned Heart Foundation Ghana. The initiative is designed to address longstanding challenges related to water access, sanitation, and hygiene that affect the school’s health, safety, and learning environment.
Responding to School WASH Challenges
Prior to the project, the school lacked adequate and reliable WASH facilities, creating challenges for both students and staff. The project was developed to provide sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions while promoting healthy behaviors among pupils, teachers, and the wider community. By combining infrastructure improvements with hygiene education and stakeholder engagement, the initiative sought to create lasting improvements in both health and learning outcomes.
Project Achievements
The project successfully transformed WASH conditions at the school through improvements in water access, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices. Students and teachers now have more reliable access to safe water, improved sanitation infrastructure, and handwashing facilities that support better health and cleanliness throughout the school. Hygiene education activities increased awareness of proper handwashing and sanitation practices, while the overall school environment has become cleaner, healthier, and more conducive to learning. The project also strengthened ownership among school leaders, parents, teachers, and community members, helping ensure that the facilities will be maintained and utilized effectively for years to come.
Community Engagement and Ownership
A key part of the project was the active involvement of school authorities, teachers, parents, and community leaders throughout implementation. Through hygiene promotion activities and ongoing engagement, stakeholders gained a stronger understanding of the importance of safe water, sanitation, and proper facility management.
