Adidome School WASH Project

Requesting $23,500 from our donors

Total Project Cost: $27,900

Project Location: Adidome, Central Tongu District, Volta Region, Ghana

Project & Program Background

The Adidome School WASH Project will improve access to safe sanitation for 906 pupils and their teachers at Adidome Roman Catholic School in Ghana’s Volta Region. The project will be coordinated by Concerned Heart Foundation Ghana in collaboration with the Adidome community leadership, school authorities and a project committee. Concerned Heart Foundation Ghana will serve as the main contact for communication, coordination, documentation and reporting, while the community will take part in implementation and monitoring.

Community Background

Adidome is a mainly rural community in the Central Tongu District of Ghana’s Volta Region, with a local economy built on farming, small-scale trading and other informal work. The community depends on basic public facilities, including one school, one health care facility and one church. Adidome School serves 906 pupils (332 boys and 574 girls), making safe and appropriate school sanitation especially important for girls.

Water, Sanitation and Health (WASH) Concerns

The school’s existing latrines are inadequate and deteriorating, leaving pupils and teachers without safe, hygienic toilets. Poor sanitation makes handwashing and a clean school environment difficult and increases exposure to sanitation-related illness.

Proposed Project

The project will construct a 12-seater Kumasi Ventilated Improved Pit (KVIP) toilet facility at Adidome School, reducing pressure on the existing latrines. Concerned Heart Foundation Ghana will work with school authorities, community leaders, parents and local artisans to carry out the work. Pupils and staff will also be taught proper toilet use, handwashing and general hygiene.

Sustainability Considerations

School authorities, teachers and community members will take responsibility for the proper use, cleaning and maintenance of the KVIP facility. Regular cleaning and inspection will become part of the school’s routine, and the school and community will identify maintenance needs early and mobilize local support for minor repairs. Durable materials, community ownership and WEFTA’s technical guidance will support long-term use.

Community Engagement

Community members, school authorities, parents and local leaders will participate throughout the project, from identifying needs and preparing the site to monitoring construction. The community will contribute about $4,400 toward the project through local labor and materials, including water, block cutting, site clearing, concrete casting and food for workers. Parents and community leaders will also help teach pupils good sanitation and hygiene practices.

WEFTA Volunteers

WEFTA volunteers will provide technical assistance through project evaluation, WASH assessment, KVIP design guidance, construction supervision, technical review and post-construction follow-up. Their support will help ensure the facility is properly designed, safely constructed and sustainable.
